Maine's Final Curtain
On our last day in Maine, Dan and I decided to drive to Mount Katahdin to summit it and hopefully see the end of the AT (and maybe see some moose!). We were unpleasantly surprised when we arrived to see just how much snow there was. We then checked with the ranger, and they informed us that the trail was not cleared of the 4+ feet of snow, and that the moose were still tucked away in the deep forest. So, our plan would have to wait. After driving three hours and checking the state park website multiple times, this put a damper on the day. Instead of turning around, we set out to find moose and explore anyway. The day was gloomy and overcast, but we had high hopes that Katahdin’s summit might peak through the clouds or a moose might show up. After hours of driving and hiking around, we were not getting lucky. But, we did stumble upon an ice cave that cheered us up! In all honesty, we could not be upset. The trip was overall a success, and one unlucky day could not kill our mood. On the way back from ice caving, we noticed the sky was starting to break up and we began to see the peak. In excitement, Dan and I stopped multiple times to capture snapshots of the piercing beauty. After seeing Katahdin, I pictured it in the background of this lake next to the ranger office we had stopped at earlier. Dan and I then set off for the lake. Many potholes and a few wrong turns later, we made it back. However, the cloud had returned and the downpour was barreling its way towards us. I captured both my representation of Katahdin as well as the lesson that not all the hidden wonders of Maine can be revealed in one trip. But truthfully, this quickly became our favorite picture from the whole trip.
